A Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton
A Kiss of Shadows
My name is Meredith “Happy” Gentry, obviously it’s not my genuine name. I set out not by any means whisper my actual name after dim for dread that one quieted word will go throughout the night winds to the delicate ear of my close relative, the Queen of Air and Darkness. She needs me dead. I don’t know why…
I fled the high court of Faerie three years prior and have been secluded from everything from that point onward. As Merry Gentry, I am a private specialist for the Gray Detective Agency: Supernatural Problems, Magical Solutions. My otherworldly aptitudes, hated at the courts of Faerie, are esteemed in the human world. Indeed, even by human principles, my enchantment isn’t garish, which is fine by me. Gaudy pulls in consideration and I can’t manage the cost of that.
Talk has it that I am dead. Not exactly. I am Princess Meredith NicEssus. To talk that name after dim is to call down a thump upon your entryway from a hand that can execute you with a touch. I have been watchful, however not sufficiently cautious. The shadows have discovered me, and they will take me back home, somehow.
