The Suspicions of Mr. WhicherThe Suspicions of Mr. Whicher

or The Murder at Road Hill House

by Kate Summerscale

It is a late spring’s night in 1860. In a rich confined Georgian house in the town of Road, Wiltshire, all is tranquil. Behind covered windows the Kent family lies sound snoozing. Sooner or later after 12 pm a puppy barks.

The family wakes the following morning to an awful revelation: an impossibly horrifying homicide has occurred in their home. The family unit resonates with stun, not slightest in light of the fact that the liable party is doubtlessly still among them. Jack Whicher of Scotland Yard, the most commended investigator of his day, achieves Road Hill House a fortnight later. He confronts an unenviable undertaking: to comprehend a case in which the lamenting family are the suspects.

The murder incites national agitation. The prospect of what may putrefy behind the shut entryways of respectable white collar class homes – conspiring workers, defiant youngsters, madness, envy, dejection and detesting – stirs fear and a sort of energy. In any case, when Whicher achieves his stunning decision there is commotion and bewilderment.
